KIYOI - Kaya Fukin Binchotan
CHF 9.50

Kaya cloth is gentle to your skin and also to the environment. It is characterized by excellent water absorption, breathability and quick drying properties.

The use of Kishu-Binchotan charcoal makes these cloths especially cleansing and durable. The charcoal is produced from sustainably selected branches of Japanese holm oak. The cloths are impregnated with this ionic cleaning charcoal and remain odor-free longer than conventional kitchen towels and also have an antimicrobial effect.

These kitchen towels are made of several layers of cotton and viscose and due to their coarse weave are 1.3 times more absorbent than pure cotton and resistant to oil stains. They originate from Nara Prefecture, where this type of "kaya" fabric has been produced since the Edo period. "Fukin" translates to washcloth. Kaya fukin are said to have been created when women workers sewed cloths for their own use from defective cloth and scraps of cloth from cutting.

Tip:
Before using the cloth, it should be rinsed thoroughly with lukewarm water to remove the natural starch that makes it stiff. After rinsing, the cloth becomes soft and fluffy as the starch glue is rinsed out.
