The vase with a narrow opening impresses with its understated design. A single branch or flower is enough to express its quiet essence. The elegant, matt black exterior is made of reddish vermilion clay (shudei), which was fired several times at high temperatures, gradually charring the clay and firing it without glaze, known as the “natural glaze method”.
This firing method originated at the end of the Heian period and was produced in Aichi Prefecture, the first of the six ancient kilns in Japan. The clay produced there is rich in iron, which makes the pottery water-resistant and smooth even when unglazed.
This elegant little vase is handmade by the renowned Tokoname-yaki potter Umehara.
