Chiyogami translates as "paper of a thousand generations". "chi" means thousand, "yo" means generation(s), "gami" means paper.

Printing is done on Kozo paper, which is made from the bark of the mulberry tree. Kozo has long, strong and sinewy fibers. It therefore has extraordinary stability, which it retains even when folded, such as origami.

This high quality yuzen is hand printed. The white kozo paper is printed on one side. The vibrant color application of each sheet is created using an intricate screen printing process. A separate screen stencil is used for each of the up to five colors (often enriched with gold and silver accents) in a design. After the ink mass has been passed through the first screen, the sheet is dried, after which the next stencil must be meticulously adjusted to ensure that the colors are precisely placed according to the design.
