60ies Kokeshi - H17.5cm
CHF 75.00

This Kokeshi doll from the 1960s is unusual because it is not made of wood, but of glass and metal. The head, however, remains made of wood.

Kokeshis are traditional, handmade wooden dolls that are typically notable for their simple and cylindrical body shapes with large heads and minimalist facial features.

Kokeshi dolls have been part of the image of Japanese onsen for around 150 years. Located at hot springs, these traditional bathhouses are a popular holiday and recreation destination in Japan. Originally, kokeshis were mainly used as cute souvenirs and toys, but today they are collected worldwide, sometimes fanatically.
Compared to Europe, however, the dolls have a very specific meaning in Japan. There are kokeshi dolls for all important events, such as births, graduations or weddings. In addition, many Japanese regard them as lucky charms or guardian angels.

High-quality kokeshi dolls are meticulously handcrafted by skilled craftsmen and artists. Wood from fruit trees, especially cherry and fan maple, which has been dried for several years, is processed in a perfectionist manner. After the doll forms are turned, they are hand-painted with traditional patterns.
