Shishigashira
CHF 750.00

The shishi mask represents a mythical lion that drives away evil spirits, famine and disease by dancing, thus not only purifying but also protecting the region. The lion dance, shishi-mai, has a long tradition and is performed every New Year.
Originally, the dance comes from China. It was brought to Japan in the early 16th century. During the dance, the lion is accompanied by taiko drummers.

The mask has a movable mouth and ears to represent different facial expressions.

Originally from a Japanese temple, the piece was part of a private collection for a long time.
