tumbler small TAISHO ROMAN

Enjoy the memory of elegant eras in modern design: this small. pretty glass TAISHO ROMAN fits cold green tea, white wine, water or any other refreshing drink. It contributes to the harmonious design of the laid table and feels like a noble piece of jewelry in the hand. The opal-colored, shimmering, milky-white pattern is not the result of incorporated color pigments, but of the "Aburidashi" glassmaking technique, in which bone ash is added to the glass and the mixture is subjected to a rapid, sharp change in temperature. This technique was brought forth in the Meiji period (1868-1912), found great favor in the Taisho era (1912-1926), and then gradually faded away. In the 1980s, the HIROTA Glass Manufactory succeeded in reviving the Aburidashi technique through a series of experiments. Designer Tatsuo Hirota released his Taisho Roman series of glass and decanters in 1980. In 2012, he was honored with the Sumida Modern Brand Recognition for it. Taisho Roman is the name of the series because it takes its cue from the word romance, which is taken from Japanese and suggests adventure, dream and passion. Glassware made using the Aburidashi technique is now only occasionally encountered in antique stores in Japan.
