Teacup – Nankei Banko

Genuine pottery made from natural Banko clay with transparent glaze. The Japanese tea bowls from Banko are known and loved for their high quality. Nankei is a traditional pottery manufactory in the heart of the Banko region. The products are characterised by their formal balance, minimalist design and high level of precision craftsmanship.

The natural crack pattern is the result of the different shrinkage of clay and glaze during the process. This crazing is then pigmented with sumi ink, a charcoal-based ink.
Another unique feature of this cup is that it produces a unique crackling sound when hot water is first poured into it.

Nankei Pottery is a manufacturer of banko ware based in Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture. Originally a "clay manufacturer" that sold clay for making pottery, the company`s pottery is characterised by its unique matte colour and soft texture.
