The Kairagi glaze (梅花皮, literally “plum tree bark”) is created when the ceramic is fired: fine cracks and structures are formed that are reminiscent of tree bark or sharkskin. This gives each bowl a unique, rustic surface.
Hyozangama pottery has a long history. When the potter Yozaemon (the fourth generation of the workshop) showed his vessels to the famous commander Nobunaga Oda, he was so impressed that Yozaemon was awarded a red seal of quality. He was also allowed to adopt the family name “Hashiba”.
The ceramics are still made by hand using traditional techniques - with great care and attention to detail.
Notice: This item is highly water-absorbent. It might cause slight color staining. It is recommended to soak in the water for 10min before first usage.
