The sumi block is a solid ink stone that has been used for centuries in Japanese calligraphy (Shodō) and sumi-e painting. It consists of finely ground soot ash, vegetable binders and natural fragrances, which are pressed into a compact, beautifully shaped block and air-dried over a long period of time.
For use, the ink block is rubbed with a little water on an ink stone (Suzuri) until the desired depth of color is achieved. Depending on the rubbing time, a fine spectrum of gray tones through to deep black is created - ideal for expressive brushstrokes or delicate gradients.
Compared to liquid ink, the color application can be controlled more precisely, which makes it particularly recommended for fine calligraphy, detailed illustrations or traditional ink art.
